[RBRC seminar] Tagged Deep Inelastic Scattering and Its Relation to Pion Parton Distributions

by Patrick Barry (Jefferson Lab)

US/Eastern
Description

Through tagged deep inelastic scattering (TDIS) experiments and the Sullivan process, an electron beam breaks up an offshell pion in the meson cloud of the target nucleon, effectively performing DIS on the pion, which accesses information about the parton distribution functions (PDFs). The splitting of the nucleon target into a charged pion and the charge-conserving tagged nucleon is described through chiral effective theory. The upcoming TDIS experiment at Jefferson Lab (JLab) will be able to access larger momentum fraction of the pion and smaller momentum transfer than in the complementary HERA experiments. I will discuss the current state of the art in pion PDF phenomenology, including the pion-induced Drell-Yan process and the role of threshold resummation as well as the potential impact of the JLab TDIS experiment and future electron ion collider.
