Observation of the mass difference between neutral charm-meson eigenstates

The flavor eigenstates of neutral mesons are superpositions of their mass eigenstates, which leads to time-dependent oscillations between the mesons and their corresponding antimeson states. The frequency of the oscillations is governed by the mass difference of the eigenstates, which is very small in the charm system and until recently had not been seen to conclusively differ from zero. A recent measurement from the LHCb collaboration will be presented which observes a nonzero value of the mass difference for the first time. The measurement also dramatically improves constraints on the size of mixing-induced CP violation. Implications of the measurement and an outlook will be then be discussed.
