All eyes on jets: jet calibrations and precision measurements in ATLAS

by Chris Delitzsch

US/Eastern
Description

Jets, collimated sprays of charged and neutral hadrons, constitute an essential piece of the physics programme carried out by the ATLAS experiment due to their presence in signal processes and various background processes, as well as their production in simultaneous proton-proton collisions. The precise reconstruction and calibration of hadronic final states is an extremely challenging experimental aspect and a critical input to many Standard Model measurements and searches for new physics at the LHC. This seminar will describe the latest advances in the reconstruction of jets and the calibration of the jet energy and mass scale and resolution of small-radius and large-radius jets in ATLAS. In addition, the impact of these improvements on measurements of jet properties and other fundamental parameters in the Standard Model dominated by jet-related systematic uncertainties will be discussed.
