Particle Physics Seminars at BNL

Track to the Future

by Doug Berry (Fermilab)

US/Eastern
Description

The LHC is not only the highest energy but also the highest intensity proton-proton collider ever constructed. In 2016, the LHC exceeded its initial designed luminosity of 10^34 cm-2s-1, and since then, it has further increased to a record setting 2.06E34 cm-2s-1. The luminosity of the LHC will continue to increase with the HL-LHC upgrade, where the accelerator will have a target maximum instantaneous luminosity of 7E34 cms-2s-1. These extreme conditions require radiation-hard detectors that can operate at high occupancy. Maintaining physics performance in this environment relies on the high granularity of the inner and outer trackers to identify and reconstruct physics objects. To facilitate this, the CMS pixel and strip tracking detectors will be completely replaced for the HL-LHC era. This seminar will cover the construction and integration of the CMS HL-LHC Outer Tracker Upgrade and its expected physics performance. Additionally, new tracking detector technologies that are currently being explored at Fermilab, which could be used in possible future upgrades to the CMS detector, will be presented.
