Minutes of EIC Far Forward Meeting 7th June 2022
==================================================

Present: Michael Murray, Yulia Furletova, Yuji Goto, Wlodek Guryn, Janusz Chwastowski,
Jeffery Landgraf, JiHee Kim, Mark Baker, Edmundo Garcia-Solis, Mark Baker

Agenda & slides at
https://indico.bnl.gov/event/16170/

The meeting opened by Michael welcoming Edmundo.  Edmundo worked on the RHIC ZDCs and recently was awarded NSF funding to work on Focal/EIC ZDC.
>>> Todo: Yuji and Edmundo will discuss how best to proceed

Also on the ZDC Jihee Kim from Argon has experience putting the ATHENA ZDC into DD4HEP.
>>> Todo: Connect Jihee to Shima to see about porting simulation.

Landgraf Jeffery was present as a link to the electronics group. As regards zero suppression he encouraged us to suppress as much as possible, particularly for the ZDC.
There was some discussion of using machine learning techniques to do a "smart" suppression but Jeffery was cautious on this.

There was also a discussion on electronic cooling for the "Roman Pots."
Managing the heat budget will probably require iterations between designers and electronics group.

>>> Todo: Michael: Invite Prague groups, CT-PPS to present on their cooling experience.

Beam impedance: BNL has a person but he is busy at the moment.
Don't yet have a description of the beam pipe layout and how the sensors fit together.

For B0 we should also consider magnetic field effects on the electronics.

Yulia raised the issue of the thermal neutron load on electronics in the forward region.
Michael commented that the LHC Fluka group has taken ZDC and TAXN drawings and converted them into a geometry file for simulation.
>>> Todo: Michael ask CERN group to present on Fluka.

The group needs to submit a list of simulation requests
Todo: Conveners compile list of energies, particle guns vs physics etc.

Mark Baker commented that Beagle could be tested against LHC UPC data.

Next meeting in 2 weeks.
