Both prompt real and virtual photons are sensitive probes of the
properties of the quark-gluon plasma and of the gluon distribution in
light and heavy nuclei.
Despite different experimental signatures, they originate from
topologically similar Feynman diagrams and both have the background of
hadron decays (arxiv:2401.12875). In this context, I will also touch on
the connection between fragmentation functions and parton showers.
Finally, I will also briefly showcase recent progress made in extending
POWHEG capabilities to support DIS (arxiv:2309.02127).
