Description

New physics effects in the lepton sector could possibly modify the well

studied neutrino flavour oscillation pattern by introducing new oscillation

damping effects. We generically label these damping effects as decoherence

and they can arise, for example, from non-forward scattering of neutrinos

propagating through a medium, non-standard averaging effects due to

a time dependent propagation distance or modifications of the inherent

structure of spacetime itself motivated by theories of quantum gravity.

We discuss a general set of conditions under which already known

sources of decoherence can be safely neglected and a search for non-

standard damping effects would be feasible.
