Subject: TIC meeting, October 14, 2024 [preTDR effort, update (FF), Radiation maps update] - Summary

This e-mail is to underline the summary of the October 14, 2024, TIC meeting, dedicated to:

(A) pre-TDR effort, update (FF)

(B) Radiation maps update

The reports prepared by Alexander Jentsch, have been greatly appreciated.

Communications on October 14:

From TC-office: “Detector Construction Hardware Database Requirements” document for ePIC has been

updated to include a few user case examples. The document can be found at ZENODO https://zenodo.org/records/13924160

From DSC's:  None reported

A) pre-TDR effort, update (FF):

Alex discussed progress on the AC-LGAD and EICROC testing at BNL and a successful TCT scans of pixilated AC-LGADs. Progress on FF beam pipe design work with vacuum group has been made. B0 detector layout challenges needing iterations, Roman pots geometry has been updated to enable changing geometry with magnet configuration choice. Alex mentioned updates adjusting Roman pots geometry per beam line configuration and a fixed bug affecting Rowan pots py portion of the momentum reconstruction. Alex also discussed a bug fix for local/global coordinate issues. Also emphasized that we must ensure that the SAME geometry XML compact file is used in the DD4HEP simulation with EICrecon for the far-forward simulations.

B) Radiation maps update:

Alex highlighted challenges with radiation studies due to simulation sensitivity to cuts and the need for specialized plugins to access Geant4 step information. The current setup agrees within 30% with STAR Hall measurements. Alex will update the wiki this week on binning. It was emphasized to understand the units and scales when taking slices from the 3D maps.

Alex requested users to cite the "EIC background task force" when using the maps.

An addition to this summary: Thanks to Alex for this elaborate explanation:

"The ROOT compatibility is specifically when producing a ROOT file with a version from ROOT 6.20.xx vs. ROOT 6.30.xx. If I produce a file with ROOT 6.30.xx, and then try to read that file (or process that file) with ANY older version of ROOT, it causes a problem. This means when I export the ePIC geometry, which is automatically ROOT 6.30.xx, I cannot then read that ROOT file into the STAR environment, which uses ROOT 5.34. I had a workaround that was okay until April, and now that doesn’t work. It doesn’t have anything to do with reading those files into EICRecon. It makes it difficult to repeat ANY of the radiation simulations with a geometry having updates past April 2024."

This issue was identified as a significant obstacle to repeating simulations, particularly for neutron doses. It was agreed on the need to resolve this issue and to have all simulations in DD4HEP.

If these notes need corrections/integration, please let me know.

Thank you,
