      irradiation test opportunity at CERN 20m

      Hi,
      this might be a good option for proton irradiation of the larger sensors we have now. I think we can use IRRAD now that ePIC is support by CERN, correct?

      Cheers,
      Simone

      Dear IRRAD Facility user,

      The run 2025 of the CERN proton irradiation facility (IRRAD) will start on Wed. 26 March 2025 and end mid-November 2025 for a total of 34 weeks.

      The proton beam at IRRAD has a momentum of 24 GeV/c, a standard gaussian beam-size of 12mm x 12mm FWHM and an average weekly intensity of ~1.7E16 p/cm^2 (on 10x10mm^2 area). The access to the IRRAD area is given once per week (Wednesday morning) to allow the installation/removal of large samples and experimental test setups.

      Installation of experiments on the irradiation tables requires dedicated support frames to be provided by the users. Moreover, depending on the experiment, an irradiation permit (PRP17) might be needed for your request be accepted. Please, note that this procedure may require several weeks to be completed. Samples aiming to cumulate very high fluence levels (>1E17 p/cm^2) need to be ready for irradiation at the beginning of the run.

      Requests for complex irradiation experiments (e.g. with online monitoring, low or cryogenic temperature, etc.) or for the irradiation of heavy materials should reach us not later than week 16, 2025.

      To submit requests for irradiation experiments, please follow these steps:

      Users need to be members of the irrad-ps-users e-group (subscribe here). The e-group is protected with the CERN Single Sign-On authentication. Users without a CERN account, need to log in with one of the alternative services provided in the authentication page:
      Organisation or institution account (if it exists in the eduGAIN list)
      External email - Guest access
      Social account
      Please, note that the e-group membership validation for new users may require some time (about 30min) and thus they won’t be authorized to log in the IRRAD Data Manager application immediately.

      Go to: https://cern.ch/idm
      Log in to the CERN Single Sign-On page with the e-mail you registered in the irrad-ps-users e-group, and you will get redirected to the IRRAD Data Manager home page;
      Press the button “Create Experiment” and fill the required details;
      After saving, you will receive a confirmation e-mail, and your request will be sent to the IRRAD facility coordinator.

      Please, note that the IRRAD facility is part of the EURO-LABS project aiming to provide to eligible users Transnational Access (TA) support. Please, check the information given in the confirmation e-mail to submit, if eligible, your EURO-LABS TA application for IRRAD.

      More information is available in the IRRAD Data Manager User Guide. Please, contact us at irrad.ps@cern.ch in case you experience problems with the registration of your experiment.

      The access to all IRRAD premises in the PS East Area are submitted to specific access rights, training and requirements listed here. Please, make sure to comply with all of these before coming to perform your experiment. Please note that the Radiation Protection training for Controlled Radiation Areas (in person at CERN) and a specific IRRAD safety course must be validated to be allowed to access the irradiation area (see here).

      Further Information and updates, when available, will be posted on the IRRAD Facility Website and via this e-group.

      Kind regards,

      IRRAD Facility team
