News, updates and action items from May 12th meeting (Tony Wong)

Question: 1 PB of persistent disk storage isn't much. Will sPHENIX storage be available on IC gen3.

Answer: yes, we plan to make existing file systems on IC gen3.

Question: Will this be an HPC resource? How large? Will it allow to run HTC applications?

Answer:  Guidance is for a small/medium-sized cluster (similar to current IC gen2), and I expect to serve similar role as IC gen1, that is, able to run moderately-sized applications and a test environment for some communities. In the past, we have experimented (successfully!) with routing HTCondor jobs to Slurm, and I expect this to be integrated in IC gen3.

Question/Comment: Suggest renaming "Archival storage" as "tape backup". What's the policy and who's responsible for managing tape storage?

Answer: Part of the policy is that user community funds its own "archival storage" resources, for example, the LQCD community has been doing this for several years.

3) Described process for PI's to obtain guidance on inclusion of funding support for SCDF/SDCC services in future proposals. The first step is to contact the facility POC for the PI's organization/community.

Fabric group presentation (Matt Cowan)

Question:  How do we request VM's for testing?

Answer: Hoping to provide OpenShift access, but with some restrictions.

Storage & Infrastructure group presentation (Jason Smith)

Question: Performance of Lustre is so much better than dCache, but it doesn't have a tape backend. Any prospect for getting a tape backend for Lustre?

Answer: Working on HPSSfs, but not clear if this is a viable replacement yet. Lustre provided a tool for SL7 but not Alma9.

AOB (Alexei, others)

1) Request to replace PHENIX dCache with Lustre -- would this make life easier for SCDF/SDCC? It will be kept separate from sPHENIX.

Good time to discuss since PHENIX dCache is scheduled for upgrade soon. Total storage is ~7 PB, which does not present a large issue.

2) Interesting discussion at TCB about future IC gen3: a) improvement over IC gen2, b) SCDF proposes technical solutions but usage policy will include input from stakeholders.

3) Discussion on using PDs for future funding -- will work with all groups.

4) Will need discussions about the future of storage--neither dCache nor Lustre will meet needs of future experiments.
