Description

We discuss recent advances using vNRQCD and SCET to study J/ψ production in the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) framework. After introducing the different energy scales and hierarchies for quarkononium production in NRQCD, we consider the TMD factorization of production cross sections for PT, ψ ∼ Mψ ≪ Q and PT,ψ ≪ Mψ ≪ Q. In the regime where PT, ψ∼ Mψ ≪ Q we show that the cross sections can still be matched onto the traditional LDMEs used in the collinear factorization framework and we discuss recent results in this hierarchy. When PT,ψ ≪ Mψ ≪ Q we show that soft gluon radiation (gluons with momentum on the order of mv∼ 750 MeV) plays a critical role. In this region, the cross sections should be matched onto two new classes of production operators: TMD shape functions and TMD soft transition functions. We compare and contrast the two and show that while the TMD soft transition functions are leading in the v powercounting of NRQCD, they are subleading in the TMD powercounting, creating an interesting competition between the two operators. Finally, we discuss applications of this work for J/ψ production at the upcoming EIC.
