DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Maci Kesler (Kent State University)\n\nOne of the ma
jor goals of modern nuclear experiments is to study the distributions of g
luons inside\nnuclei at high energy. A key measurement is exclusive vector
meson (VM) production in diffractive\nelectron-nucleus collisions (e+A).
In coherent production\, the gluon spatial distribution inside the\nnucleu
s can be obtained through a Fourier transform of the momentum transfer dis
tribution (|t|).\nThis research aims to overcome the two main obstacles of
the |t| measurement: limited precision\narising from the momentum resolut
ion of the outgoing electron and the overwhelming incoherent\nbackground.
We demonstrate that by measuring the projected |t| distribution along the
direction\nperpendicular to the electron scattering plane\, the effect of
the outgoing electron’s momentum\nresolution can be effectively mitigate
d\, and the diffractive pattern is largely restored. Furthermore\,\nwe pro
pose to measure the angular distribution of the VM’s decay daughters to
statistically remove\nthe incoherent background. This study provides a pos
sible solution to overcome the challenges met\nby utilizing the diffractiv
e VM production for imaging gluon distributions in nuclei at the Electron-
 \nIon Collider (EIC)\n\nhttps://indico.bnl.gov/event/33315/
