Testing matter-antimatter symmetry with the hyperfine splitting of antihydrogen

Description

The ALPHA collaboration at CERN has been leading the way in testing fundamental symmetries using magnetically trapped antihydrogen. Recent breakthroughs include precision spectroscopy of the 1S–2S transition, fine structure measurements, laser cooling of antihydrogen, and the first-ever gravitational free-fall study of antihydrogen. Advances in magnetic field control and enhanced antihydrogen trapping rates, enabled by ion-assisted antihydrogen production, have recently allowed us to achieve a 4~ppm measurement of the antihydrogen ground-state hyperfine splitting, an improvement of roughly two orders of magnitude over previous determinations.

 

In this talk, I will motivate hyperfine spectroscopy of antihydrogen as a test of matter-antimatter symmetry (CPT symmetry), present our latest spectroscopy results, and outline prospects for pushing antihydrogen spectroscopy to even higher precision in the near future.
