Emily Duden (Brandeis University), "Search for BSM physics using long-lived signatures in ATLAS"
by
Long-lived particles (LLPs) are a promising signature to look for new physics. These particles can travel macroscopic distances within the detector before decaying, producing displaced signatures capable of evading traditional searches. Recent developments in ATLAS tracking and triggers make Run-3 (2022-2026) LLP searches particularly promising. In this talk, I will discuss two Run-3 LLP searches. The first is a model-independent search for events featuring displaced vertices (DVs) and displaced muons. This analysis, published in March 2026, improved limits on R-Parity Violating (RPV) SUSY scenarios by up to two orders of magnitude and was the first ATLAS or CMS exotics analysis to use 2024 data. The second search explores a simple scalar extension to the Standard Model, where the Higgs decays to two long-lived displaced scalar particles decaying to displaced jets. Finally, I discuss the future of LLP tracking in ATLAS, particularly with the new ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk), which will make tracking possible in the High-Luminosity LHC.
