US/Pacific
Description

Quick recap

The meeting focused on updates and discussions about the design and assembly of the stave and cooling system for a detector project. Simone Mazza reported progress on the cooling system and the first assembly, while Anish presented a mechanics update on stave placement, coverage, and tray design, highlighting changes to ensure full sensor coverage and discussing challenges with service hybrid integration and cooling. The group discussed concerns about the mechanical integrity and cooling efficiency of the service hybrid, as well as options for routing cables and connectors. Andy and Rachid shared insights on wire bonding procedures and stave assembly, emphasizing the importance of a stable and uniform support structure. Grigory updated the team on the progress of jigs for sensor and ASIC placement, aiming for high precision. The meeting also touched on administrative issues related to project documentation and funding. The participants agreed to skip the next weekly meeting and reconvene in two weeks.

Next steps

  • Anish: Upload the mechanics update slides to the BNL Indico agenda, or email them to Simone Mazza for uploading.
  • Anish: Work with the service hybrid team to get inputs and agreement on the proposed service hybrid concept.
  • Anish: Perform individual stave thermal FEA to validate the new mechanical layout, then proceed to full tray thermal FEA.
  • Anish: Design the mechanism to mount staves on trays, prototype it, and perform FEA.
  • Simone Mazza: Attend the TOF FE meeting to discuss the service hybrid height and connection issues.
  • Andy: Start working on the ITP (Integration, Test, and Procedure) document for the full stave assembly, including all details discussed.
  • Andy: Arrange a meeting with Matthew (and others) to discuss and agree on the stave assembly and wire bonding procedure.
  • Andy: Meet with Surabhi (and possibly others) to resolve the PD (Project Document) and SOW (Statement of Work) issues.
  • Grigory: Obtain the first prototype of the jigs from the machine shop, measure the precision, and share the updated drawings.
  • Grigory: Follow up with Fermilab engineers regarding the precision and height specifications for the ASICs/FCFDs.

Summary

Cooling System and Stave Design

Simone Mazza provided updates on the cooling system setup, noting they are nearly complete and expect to receive the final tablet design for the first assembly within a month. The team plans to conduct thermal studies at both Santa Cruz and Purdue locations once the first assembly is complete. Anish presented a mechanics update on the stave design, explaining they revised the stave stacking arrangement from two to three layers to ensure full sensor coverage with 138 staves total, and discussed the need for further input from the service hybrid team regarding electronics placement.

Stave Design Updates Discussion

Simone Mazza and Anish discussed updates to the stave design, including reducing the number from 144 to 138 staves and potential placement of service hybrids. They addressed concerns about cooling solutions for the service hybrid, with Anish explaining that rerouting the cooling pipe would be necessary if the design proceeds. Anish clarified that the current design places the service hybrid on one side of the stave, and he agreed to follow up with Dr. Jung regarding the connection between the service hybrid and FPC.

Service Hybrid Cooling Solutions

Simone Mazza raised concerns about the efficiency of cooling the service hybrid and the mechanical integrity of the stave when routing pipes on one side. Anish explained the mounting mechanism design, which involves support on both sides of the stave. Andy addressed thermal conductivity concerns, explaining that the carbon fiber and interface materials should not limit heat transfer, and suggested rerouting a second pipe for additional support. The team discussed potential solutions, including using highly thermally conductive materials and rerouting pipes on both sides of the service hybrid.

Signal Routing to Service Hybrid

The team discussed routing signals from one side of a stave to a service hybrid, with Simone Mazza raising concerns about maintaining mechanical integrity and the need to connect FPCs to the service hybrid. They explored options including using connectors, cables, or flexible circuits, though specific details about the connection method remain unclear. Simone Mazza mentioned attending a TOF FE meeting the next day to gather more information about the 15mm height specification, which remains unconfirmed.

Wire Bonding and Stave Assembly

The team discussed approaches for wire bonding and assembling staves. Andy and Simone Mazza clarified that staves would be populated and wirebonded separately before being assembled together, rather than assembling them as a sandwich structure. Dan raised concerns about holding the state during wire bonding, and Rachid explained that Atlas uses a frame system to hold staves while wire bonding, though this approach may not be suitable for their current setup. Andy expressed preference for the separate assembly approach to avoid issues with uniform force application and epoxy interfaces, suggesting they could use end plates and clamps similar to Atlas's design.

Stave Design Assembly Challenges

The team discussed assembly and wire bonding challenges with the stave design, with Rachid and Andy expressing concerns about the current segmented approach and advocating for a single-piece support structure instead of multiple tabs. They agreed to schedule a meeting involving Matthew to discuss the assembly procedure and coordinate on the mechanical design. Andy will begin working on an ITP document to detail the assembly process and thermal considerations, while Grigory reported progress on prototype jigs with a target precision of 50 microns, though component specifications from Fermilab are still pending.
