Description

Every high school science teacher will tell you that students usually learn science best in the laboratory by curiosity driven discoveries. Unfortunately, many of the most interesting experiments require instrumentation and equipment that is simply too costly for a classroom laboratory. The goal of this workshop is to introduce local educators to the research opportunities available at two premier BNL research facilities, the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) as resources for high school science.

Participants will learn how teachers and their students become users of these facilities, allowing them to go beyond the classroom and utilize unique research tools used by scientists from all over the world. Presentations will be given by the facility scientists to introduce the available techniques and describe the process of proposal submission. In addition, teachers and students who are already facility users will share their research outcomes and experiences. This workshop is offered to the community free of charge.

Organizers: Aleida Pérez (OEP, BNL), Vivian Stojanoff (NSLS-II, BNL), Lisa Miller (NSLS-II, BNL), Dmytro Nykypanchuk (CFN, BNL)
