Moving Forward with SAPHIRA

SAPHIRA is the only astronomical NIR APD array, using HgCdTe to post comparable performance to the HAWAII series while also counting individual photons. Development is presently focused on moving up to larger devices with improved characteristics. This talk will cover basic characteristics like the dark current measured against bias voltage, where tunneling comes into effect with higher gains, as well as a limitation to fast photon counting that appears at lower temperatures. Production at Leonardo is focused on bettering the devices for future science applications, which will open new areas in NIR astronomy.
