Nuclear Physics Seminars at BNL

Nuclear Data for Space Exploration

by Daniel Cebra (University of California, Davis), Dr David Brown, Prof. Lee Bernstein (LBNL/UCB)

US/Eastern
Description

The successful exploration of the outer planets and their satellites presents numerous challenges including the construction of compact reactors for propulsion and energy production, the development of robust environmental diagnostics, and the ability to design radiation hardened electronics and shielding for astronaut safety.  In this talk we will present examples of how all three of these areas depend on nuclear and atomic data, with a specific focus on radiation effects.  We will also discuss plans to address these needs through a combination targeted measurements, the compilation of archival reaction data and improved reaction simulations.
