First Dark Matter Search Results from the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Experiment

Description

LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is the 2nd generation direct dark matter detection experiment located 1 mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD. LZ is employing dual-phase xenon time projection chamber with an active mass of 7 tonnes at the center as its WIMP detector. Recently the LZ collaboration reported the results from its first search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60 live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 tonne. The results show our data is consistent with background-only hypothesis, setting the world-leading limits on spin-independent (SI) WIMP-nucleon and spin-dependent WIMP-neutron cross-sections for WIMP masses above 9 GeV/c2. The best exclusion limit is achieved at 30 GeV/c2, excluding SI cross sections above 5.9×10−48 cm2 at the 90% confidence level.
