Joint Physics Colloquium and EIC-Department seminar: The HERA lepton-proton collider and its relevance for the EIC
by
LSR
The experience with the lepton-hadron collider HERA which was constructed from 1984-1990 and was operated from 1992 to 2007 has some relevance for the EIC, especially with regards to ECI RI design, ECI commissioning and CEI early operation. HERA was operated for most of its operation with 27.5 GeV Leptons and 920 GeV protons which corresponds to a center of mass energy of 318 GeV and reached a peak luminosity of L=5.3x10cms* with proton beam currents of 100 mA and electron current 50 mA. This talk will provide a brief historical overview of HERA and will focus on commissioning and early operation with special regards to detector backgrounds after a complete rebuilt of the two interaction regions in the year 2000.
