Description

Silicon is a well-behaved and thoroughly utilized material for many components of particle detector systems across a wide range of applications. From medical imaging to astrophysics to collider-based fundamental experiments, scientists are pushing the limits of detector and data stream capabilities necessitating further research and development. This talk will illustrate the rich future of pixelated silicon detectors through three case studies of active R&D projects: the AstroPix chip, an HVCMOS MAPS sensor for astrophysics and nuclear physics; 3D Photon-to-Digital Converters (3D-PDCs), next-generation digital silicon photomultipliers for medical imaging and nuclear security; and the NEUROPix neuromorphic computing project which aims to bring data processing to the detector edge with machine learning.
