Local Information

This page contains a bit of background information about the local site.

Access to BNL site

Upon arrival at the BNL main gate, inform the security guard that you will be attending the workshop on Central Computing Support for Photon Sciences in Building 510. The security guard will ask you to drive over to the BNL check-in trailer, where you must present a photo ID to the security officer to verify that you are on the list of workshop participants. Acceptable forms of photo ID are driver's license (or other government-issued photo ID) for US citizens and passport  for non-US citizens.

You will receive a temporary badge that allows you to access the BNL site for the day. Please show the temporary badge to the security guard before you drive away.  Additionally, all non-US citizens must check-in at the GUV Center (Building 400) upon obtained site access. Ask check-in trailer for a site map or access it here.

Please allow 45 minutes to complete the badging and check-in process. Since the workshop begins at 9 am, it is recommended that arrive at the main gate no later than 8:15 am.

Parking

You may park at any properly marked parking area, except those restricted to administration, handicapped, service or emergency (fire/police/ambulance) vehicles, which are clearly marked. Suggested parking lots are clearly marked on the maps below.

There will be signs near the parking lots to direct you to the meeting venue.

Workshop Venue

Room 1-224 in Building 510 (Physics Department) has been reserved for the workshop.

To reach the Physics Department building: upon arriving at the main gate, enter the right-hand lane and follow it through the stop light and all the way around a bend to the left. As the road comes to an end, you will be facing the Physics building; parking can be found to the left, right, and across the street from the building.

Route from BNL main gate to Physics Dept building and parking

Signs will be posted with directions near the meeting venues. An additional map of the BNL campus and the location of the Physics building is available here. You may also request a copy of the BNL site map at the check-in trailer.

Lunch and Coffee Breaks

Morning and afternoon breaks will be provided at the workshop venue. Participants can go to Berkner Hall (the BNL cafeteria) for lunch (5 minutes walk from workshop venue).

Workshop Dinner

The workshop dinner on Monday evening, September 24th, will be held at Phil's (see link below). Phil's is a short ~15 minute drive from BNL.

Suggested Local Restaurants

There are two small towns near BNL, Port Jefferson (a 32-minute drive to the north shore) and Patchogue (a 24-minute drive to the south shore). Both have a well-defined walkable downtown area with plenty of (some free) parking and a cluster of restaurants, pubs and theaters. Yelp lists numerous establishments with community-based ratings for Port Jefferson and Patchogue.

A short list of other nearby restaurants recently patronized by the RACF staff and found to provide quality meals at an acceptable price is shown below. In all cases, we recommend Google maps or GPS for driving directions, if you are not familiar with the local roads.
