Description

Quantum materials lie at the heart of condensed matter physics due to their rich properties, such as superconductivity, charge, spin and pair density waves, pseudogaps, frustrated magnetism, colossal magnetoresistance and metal-insulator transitions. Emergence of these application-relevant electronic properties is frequently coupled to the underlying host lattice. The structural responses can be localized and hard to detect using conventional low energy powder diffraction techniques due to the weak diffuse scattering signals being hidden under the strong Bragg reflections. Total scattering-based methods, such the atomic pair distribution function (PDF), offer a powerful tool set that has been successfully utilized to study weak structural responses associated with such electronic phenomena. This workshop will bring together leading researchers in the field of quantum materials and total scattering methods to review important materials classes and to point out the critical structural issues. This workshop will demonstrate how PDF is deployed to study these materials. It will showcase current and future capabilities of 28-ID-1 beamline of the NSLS-II, and will identify the total scattering instrumentation developments needed to address the most pressing questions at the forefront of structure/property relationship in these systems.
