The US ATLAS Summer Undergraduate Program for Exceptional Researchers (SUPER) provides funding for undergraduate students in the US to work on ATLAS physics analysis, performance tools, detector and electronics R&D, core software and computing during the summer.

The ATLAS Experiment is a worldwide effort with over 3000 physicists and engineers - with a strong participation from 45 US universities and national labs (US-ATLAS) - at the CERN international laboratory located in Geneva, Switzerland. The project aims to improve our understanding of the Universe - its birth, evolution, current state, and future. ATLAS research offers a wide range of practical applications and educational opportunities.

Students currently enrolled at an undergraduate institution may apply to participate in the 8-week SUPER program at a US-ATLAS institute.  Successful applicants will be eligible for $5500 to cover living expenses.  Participants are expected to spend the entire 8 weeks at a US-ATLAS institute for summer research work.

Applicants should identify as one of the following types of student:

  1. Students who are enrolled at or near a US-ATLAS institution, and who have an existing relationship with a member of US-ATLAS who will serve as their mentor.  These students are expected to continue their research at their home US-ATLAS institution.
  2. Students who are enrolled at a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) that does not have a US-ATLAS group, and who are willing to travel to a US-ATLAS institution for the 8-week program.  Students in this group do not need to have identified a US-ATLAS member as a mentor in advance, one will be identified by the program.  Funds to support travel to the US-ATLAS site will be provided by the SUPER program.

Awardees will be asked to submit two progress reports and present their work at a symposium in August.

Under Represented Minorities and students at Minority Serving Institutes are encouraged to apply.

Application deadline: February 17, 2023 at 11:59pm US Eastern Time.
