Rare kaon decays are among our most sensitive probes of high-energy dynamics in the standard model and beyond. Recent theoretical efforts focused on direct and indirect CP violation in the neutral kaon system. After a general introduction to the topic, I will present some updates on predicting two of the most exciting observables, namely, $\epsilon_K$ and the rare decay $K_L \to \mu \mu$.
