Science as Connection: Blending Physics, Pedagogy, and Cinema

Description
What does it mean to be human in science? My own path, from years of doing theoretical nuclear physics research to reimagining how we communicate and teach science, to making movies, has been about searching for new ways to answer this question. Storytelling is one exceptionally powerful way to foster an environment of thriving in our physics community and to have some agency over how we are seen in society. I will share how I’ve sought to challenge stereotypes and open new ways of engaging with science through the classroom, creative projects, and cinema, most recently, my feature documentary Rare Connections. Filmed during the launch of the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University, this film uses a poetic lens and intimate portraits of scientists to reveal the emotional, creative, and deeply human side of physics, and to invite us to reimagine our relationship with science.
