Speaker Guidelines

Oral Presentations

All talks must be presented using the session laptops, which will be managed by dedicated session helpers. To ensure the smooth operation of all sessions, please upload your presentation to the APS DNP Meeting Google Drive by Friday, October 9, 2026, at 11:59 PM EDT. The link to the Google Drive folder will be communicated directly to all speakers.

Presentations must be submitted as PDF files. Before uploading your presentation, please open and review the PDF using Adobe Acrobat to ensure that all slides display correctly.

The Google Drive folders are organized by day (Sunday through Wednesday) and session ID. When uploading your presentation, please locate the folder corresponding to your session and upload your file there.

Please use the following file-naming convention:

TalkNumber_SessionID_LastName_FirstName.pdf

For example, the fifth (5th) talk in session D01 for a speaker named LastName, FirstName should be named:

5_D01_LastName_FirstName.pdf

Speaker Ready Room

Room 410, 4th Floor, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown Hotel

We strongly encourage presenters to visit the Speaker Ready Room if you need access to a computer to upload your presentation or to confirm that all slides display correctly.

This is particularly important if you have not previously reviewed and tested your PDF file.

Practical Matters

  • Invited talks: Invited talks are 36 minutes (30+6) in total: 30 minutes for the presentation and 6 minutes for questions.

  • Contributed talks: Contributed talks are 12 minutes (10+2) in total: 10 minutes for the presentation and 2 minutes for questions.

  • Session Chair

    • Each session will have a chair who will introduce the speakers and call on audience members during the question-and-answer period.

    • The chair will also help keep speakers on schedule. For invited talks, the chair will give 5-minute and 1-minute warnings, leaving the full 6 minutes for questions. For contributed talks, the chair will give a 2-minute warning, leaving the full 2 minutes for questions.

  • Session Helper

    • Each session will have a dedicated session helper who will set up the speaker's slides and provide a laser pointer/clicker.

    • Session helpers can be identified by a pin labeled “APS Session Helper.”

Suggestions for Giving an Excellent Presentation

  • Talks should tell a compelling story with a beginning, middle, and end.

  • Slides should support a narrative that conveys just a few key takeaway points.

  • Your first slide should be compelling and capture the attention of the audience.

  • Emphasize the significance of your research and the methods used in your investigation.

  • Present results in the form of figures, images, or tables whenever possible.

  • Use audiovisual materials that are relevant to your talk and help convey the significance of your results.

  • Practice your talk several times and respect the allocated time. A talk that runs long takes time away from other speakers and deprives the audience of the opportunity to ask questions.

  • Good questions are one of the most rewarding parts of giving a presentation. Leave sufficient time for questions and prepare well-thought-out answers to questions you anticipate receiving.

  • Number your slides so that questions can be easily directed to the appropriate part of your talk.

  • Keep things simple and avoid unnecessary jargon, highly specialized vocabulary, and unfamiliar abbreviations.

  • Giving a presentation is an important way for the community to get to know you and your research. Put thought and effort into your presentation, and enjoy the opportunity to share your research with your colleagues.
