Local Travel

The meeting will take place on the University of Glasgow Gilmorehill campus. The University of Glasgow Gilmorehill campus is situated in the Hillhead suburb of Glasgow which is well connected to the rest of the city and is a short distance from the city centre. Information on how to reach the University, as well as information on getting around campus, is included below.

Campus Information

The University of Glasgow Gilmorehill campus is situated in the suburb of Hillhead in the West End of Glasgow on a hill overlooking the River Kelvin. A map of the campus is available here.

A searchable interactive map is also available here.

Please click this link for a dedicated page on the Rooms and Venues for the meeting.

Subway

Glasgow has a small Subway which consists of one loop line. Trains travel clockwise on the Outer line and anti-clockwise on the Inner line.

Kelvinbridge or Hillhead are the closest station to the meeting venues. Kelvinbridge is closer to the plenary venue and Hillhead closer to the parallel venues, but both are very close. Travelling from the city centre to Kelvinbridge/Hillhead, take the Inner line.

Travelling from the Kelvinbridge/Hillhead towards the city centre, take the Outer line. Buchanan Street and St.Enoch stations are both located in the city centre.

Trains are frequent in each direction, with 4 minute frequencies at peak times and 6-8 minutes off peak. Journey times from Kelvinbridge/Hillhead to the city centre are approximately 10 minutes.

You can use a contatctless (tap) enabled debit/credit card to pay for your journey. Simply tap in and out of the station using your card, make sure you use the same card to enter and exit.

Alternatively, tickets are available to purchase from machines at all stations. A return costs £3.50 and a day ticket is £4.45.

Please note that due to this being an old system (the 3rd oldest underground metro in the world!), accessibility can be limited. Please refer to SPT's Station Access Guides for station accessibility information.

Buses

The majority of local buses in Glasgow are run by First Bus Glasgow. Tickets, including day tickets, are available to purchase on board First and other bus operators in Glasgow. Alternatively, First offers a "tap on, tap off" system where you can simply tap your contactless (tap) enabled debit/credit card or google/apple pay device as you board and as you disembark. Fares for trips using this system are capped at £6.30 per day.

Google Maps provides sensible suggestions for bus routes when planning a trip. The 4/4a is a key service serving the University from the City Centre. Journey times are comparable, but slightly longer, than the subway and subject to traffic. However, the bus represents a more accessible alternative.

Driving

Parking around the University campus and Hillhead generally is limited and expensive. Glasgow city centre also has a low emissions zone in place and numerous one-way streets. Unless necessary, driving is not recommended. This is particularly true for international guests due to the (likely) difference in the side of the road you drive on!
