Chirality, Vorticity and Magnetic Field in Heavy Ion Collisions

US/Pacific
Description

Because the 7th international conference on chirality, vorticity, and magnetic field in heavy ion collision has been postponed to 2023 due to COVID restrictions https://indico.ihep.ac.cn/event/16043/, we plan to have a small workshop to review the recent advances in experimental and theoretical studies on these topics. Recent results on CME searches from the RHIC isobar collision data by the STAR experiment in 2022 have placed stringent constraints on possible reaction plane dependent charge separation arising from different chiral magnetic effect (CME) due to magnetic field difference in the isobar Zr+Zr and Ru+Ru collisions. The isobar results also stimulated new experimental and theoretical endeavors to search for the CME. In addition, major advances have been made in measurements of hyperon polarization and vector meson spin alignment, and theoretical mechanisms and new phenomena that connecting to the vorticity of the QCD drops produced in nuclear collisions. This workshop is intended to serve as a bridge point to timely review these exciting topics, in anticipation of the 7th international conference to be held in middle or later part of 2023. The small workshop will be hosted at the UCLA campus on December 2-4, 2022. We expect that the number of attendees will be limited to 40 or so due to uncertain COVID situation then in Los Angeles area.

The goals of the UCLA workshop are to address these scientific issues:

  1. What experimental measurements and/or theory and experiment comparison results would constituent an unambiguous discovery of the CME, CMW, Vorticity and Magnetic Field in heavy ion collisions?

  2. What collision data at RHIC or other facilities will be needed for these potential discoveries? Do we need more data to be taken at RHIC in the future if such opportunity arises?

  3. What experimental and theoretical efforts are needed to further understand the background in CME/CMW searches?

  4. What are possible future theoretical and experimental developments for vorticity and global/local polarizations in heavy ion collisions?

  5. What is the physical mechanism responsible for the large global spin alignment of phi mesons?

  6. What is the status and new development to experimentally confirm the transit magnetic field in colliding heavy ions?

If you would like to join the workshop and/or present your results/perspectives on these scientific issues, please send a request to a member of the local organizing committee.
